Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate breaks collision with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Valparai for the urban local body elections 2022

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate who was supposed to be contesting for DMK will be contesting separately reportedly due to forcing the candidates to contest under DMK’s rising sun symbol.

Valparai: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate will be contesting separately in Valparai, and not with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the local polls.

The nomination papers for the urban local body elections were filed from the 28th of January to 4th of February. 7th February was the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers, some candidates withdrew their nominatios. While symbols have been allotted to independent candidates, the final list of candidates has been released and there is a complaint that the coalition party has forced the candidates to contest on the DMK's symbol.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), which is part of the DMK alliance will be contesting in Valparai municipality in Coimbatore district and was allotted the 12th ward. The agreement was signed by Varadarajan, the district in charge of Coimbatore South, and Paramasivam, a member of the Communist Party of Marxist State Committee. This was followed by the nomination of Paramasivam on behalf of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

On Monday, when the symbols were allotted, Paramasivam was reportedly forced to contest with DMK’s rising sun symbol and not the CPM’s Hammer Sickle Star symbol which created confusion.

Similarly, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal party candidate was also forced to contest with DMK’s symbol, which the party accepted as they had no official separate symbol. However, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Paramasivam refused to contest and was reportedly negotiated a deal demanding to contest with rising sun. The DMK party has now fielded another candidate in counter after Paramasivan refused to accept the deal.

Speaking on the issue, Paramasivam stated that” An agreement was signed between Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Communist Party of Marxist, according to which the ward no.12 was allocated for Communist Party of India (Marxist). However, they insisted on contesting using the DMK’s symbol and also offered money to make a deal.”

Paramasivan stated that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is a national party and has an official separate symbol, the hammer sickle star, and questioned as to how to contest with a different one. He stated that, upon Paramasivan’s refusal, DMK defied the alliance norms and has brought in Anbarasan to contest using their symbol and also making him file nominations in advance.

He added, “I have been vocal in meeting the demands of tea plantation workers and solving the problems of the people. So, it shows that I do not want to become a councillor in the municipality. Coalition partners should only be able to collect votes in MP elections and MLA elections. How could they insist on not contesting their symbol? No matter what, I am competing on the hammer sickle star symbol."

A total of 95 candidates will contest for 21 wards at Valparai in the upcoming local body elections on the 19th.
