Autopsy of an elephant that had mysteriously died near Pillur Dam revealed a well-developed 7-month old fetus in its womb.
Coimbatore: A 35-year old female elephant was found mysteriously dead near the Maanar Pirivu of the Pillur Dam in Karamadai Wildlife Sanctuary in Coimbatore district. The cause of the elephant's death is unknown.
Forest officials who found the dead elephant informed higher authorities. A medical team including Karamadai Forest Officer Manoharan, anti- poaching prevention guards of the Mudumalai Elephant Camp North and Veterinarian Rajesh of the Tholampalayam Government Veterinary Hospital and Dr. Kavitha arrived at the spot.
On examining the body of the dead elephant, they found that the elephant had a well-developed 7-month old fetus in its womb. It was also revealed that the elephant had a stab wound with ivory. After the autopsy, the body of the female elephant was dug and buried in the same place with the help of a JCB machine. The death of a female elephant with a fetus in its womb has caused great grief among wildlife activists.
