The maternal death rate, despite the complications, the threat of the pandemic, is at zero at the GH, Coimbatore in the month of January.
Coimbatore: The Gynaecology department in government hospital has achieved the feat of no maternal death reported here in the city in the month of January.
Under the guidance of Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital Dean, Dr. A. Nirmala, headed by Dr. R. Manonmani, Head of Department of Gynaecology and Gynaecologists, the doctors of the Department of Gynaecology and Gynaecologists have worked with the doctors of various departments of the hospital encouraging them to prevent any maternal death in January. This has resulted in no maternal mortality rate in Coimbatore at the GH in January.
A total of 1,293 women were admitted for delivery and maternity care in January. About 60 percent of them had maternity issues. In January, 650 deliveries were performed in the hospital, and 173 Covid-affected pregnant women were also admitted at the hospital, as the third wave was at its peak in January. The corona-infected mothers were treated appropriately, and 81 gave birth at the hospital.
In addition, 50 mothers who needed intensive care were admitted and recovered to return home healthy. Of these, 18 were admitted in life or death situations, and recovered from intensive care with the help of other life-saving treatments, including artificial respiration. Six people recovered with risks of gestational blood pressure and five with heart disorder. One of them suffered from a very dangerous maternal heart failure that required artificial respiration called PPCM and recovered after proper treatment was administered.
A mother was also treated with a sophisticated medical system called the Uterine Artery Embolisation to treat the rare stupor after delivery.
Several mothers from in and around Coimbatore, who were diagnosed with coronavirus infection were refused treatment at private hospital, were admitted to the GH here, where they underwent treatment and returned home. It is noteworthy that the hospital treated the public without any maternal deaths despite the Covid threat.
