Coimbatore: The incident in which Nanjan, a member of the Irular tribe, was killed by a wild elephant near Dolampalayam in Coimbatore district has caused grief among the people of the area.
There are more than 10 villages in the hilly terrain including Mottiyur and Seenkuzhi near Dolampalayam near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district. More than 50 families of the Irular tribe live in these pockets. Due to its dense forest cover, wildlife including elephants, bison, leopards and deer occasionally move out of the forest in search of food and water.
Meanwhile, Nanjan (50) and his nephew Nanjappan (28) from Singukuli area went to the forest near Mottiyur at around 7 pm yesterday to spend some quality time. At that time, the lone wild elephant that had been hiding in the area suddenly attacked Nanjan leaving him seriously injured in the face and chest and died at the scene. Another fortunately survived.
Upon learning of the incident, Karamadai police rushed to the spot and recovered the body and sent it to Mettupalayam Government Hospital for autopsy. A case has been registered and a serious investigation is underway. Forest officers who received information about the incident rushed to the spot and are conducting an investigation.
