The city’s Regional Fishermen Cooperative Society protested with fishing nets demanding that the Government Order issued for the general auction of fish algae lease has to be revoked.
Coimbatore: A protest was staged at the District Collectorate seeking reversal of the fish algae lease public auction. The Coimbatore Regional Fishermen Cooperative Society protested with fishing nets to press for the withdrawal of the order for public auction of fish algae lease.
The Coimbatore Regional Fishermen Cooperative Society has taken a lease to fish at the 11 lakes in the city, with a lease period of 5 years from 2019 to 2023. A man from Theni district had filed a case in the Madras High Court seeking public auction of the fish algae lease. The judge also ruled that a public auction is to be held and based on this, the Commissioner of Fisheries, Tamil Nadu issued an order that the fish algae lease would be auctioned publicly.
Protesting against this, the Coimbatore Regional Fishermen Cooperative Society protested with fishing nets in front of the Coimbatore District Collectorate. The demonstrators stated that public auctions would affect the livelihood of poor fishermen, affecting about 2.35 lakh fishermen in Tamil Nadu and about 761 in Coimbatore taluk. They also requested the Fisheries Commissioner to withdraw the order immediately.
