With the Election Code of Conduct in place in the city, post the announcement of the local body elections date, the flying squad has been vigilant in seizing unaccounted cash.
Coimbatore: The Election Flying Squad seized ₹ 21.33 lakh in two days here in Coimbatore, and a couple carrying ₹ 2 lakh cash were also nabbed.
A total of 72 flying squads have been formed in Coimbatore to monitor election code violators. Four persons including an assistant executive engineer, two policemen and a cameraman in each squad are involved in round-the-clock surveillance. The squads are engaged in intensive vehicle audits since the announcement of the election date in Coimbatore. A car was intercepted two days ago by the team led by Central Zone Flying Squad Officer, Suresh Kumar at the Sungam Bypass area under Ward 82 of Coimbatore.
The FST seized ₹ 17, 50,000 being carried without proper documents. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Flying Squad Officer Dhanalakshmi raided the Vilankurichi road in North Zone and seized ₹ 1,83,700 carried by Prabhakaran without proper papers.
Similarly, officials led by the Election Flying Squad Officer, Sumathi raided the Kavundampalayam area on Sunday night. A couple carrying ₹ 2 lakh cash without permission were nabbed. In total, the flying squads have seized ₹ 21,33,700 in the last 2 days alone. The seized amount was handed over to the Corporation authorities. They have further issued a warning that in case public and traders carry goods or money over ₹ 50,000 without proper documentation, the cash will be seized.
Election officials have stated that all seized items can be retrieved by producing relevant documents. The Election Code of Conduct came into force from the evening of January 26, since the election date was announced in Coimbatore.
