Coimbatore: A huge fire broke out at the 650-acre garbage dump in Vellalore on Sunday, triggering heavy smoke in the area.
A fire broke out at the 650-acre garbage dump in Vellalore once again at 10 pm on Sunday, and a team of 25 fire brigades was involved in the process of extinguishing it. The public in the vicinity suffered heavy smoke due to the fire.
The fire department of the area was informed while, the District Fire Officer Annadurai, Deputy Fire Officer Azhagar Samy led one fire tender each, and firemen from Peelamedu, Kavundampalayam, and Coimbatore South Fire Stations gathered to extinguish the fire.However, the delay in arrival of the fire brigade caused slackening in extinguishing the fire.
The Corporation-owned dump yard at the Chettipalayam Road under Vellalore Town Panchayat, Coimbatore. Garbage collected from all the 100 wards in Coimbatore city is being dumped here. Fire breaks out from time to time at the dump yard due to the heavy garbage collected in the same area. Every time a fire breaks here, it causes a lot of fire and black smoke. About 50,000 people living in the surrounding areas suffer from respiratory disorders, including shortness of breath, and are suffering severely.
A bio-mining scheme at an outlay of ₹60-crores was implemented after a lot of speculations as to if the fire breaks automatically or do the employees here deliberately set fire to reduce the amount of garbage.
While the corporation administration had announced that 2,000 to 2,500 cubic meters of garbage would be graded and destroyed every day, a complete solution is yet to be reached.
