The city police have arrested two sweet shop owners in Telugupalayam for allegedly employing children for work at their shops and have booked the owners under the Child Labour Act
Coimbatore: Two shop owners in the city have been arrested for employing children below 14 for work at their shops.
The National Child Labour Project, NCLP officials received a complaint that children were being employed in a sweet shop in Rajeshwari Nagar, Telugupalayam in Coimbatore.
Following this, officials including Coimbatore District Child Labour Project Officer Alex went on a raid at the alleged shops, identified two boys, aged 9 and 11, who were employed in the sweet shop.
A complaint was lodged with the Selvapuram police. Acting on the complaint, police have registered a case under the Child Labour Act (Prohibition and Regulation) against two sweet shop owners, Thavasi Appan Adaikalam (31) of Selvapuram Telugu Palayam and Kannan (42) of Selvapuram Chokambudur. Later, two child laborers were rescued.
The employment of child laborers in large businesses and factories in Coimbatore is prohibited. The authorities are taking action in case of violation.
