A decomposed body of a baby elephant was found in a locked nutritious meal center while inspecting a school on the eve of the municipal election nomination process
Valparai: A decomposed corpse of a baby elephant was found in an abandoned school’s nutritious meal center. The forest department burnt down the carcass after an examination.
The urban local polls nomination processes were scheduled to begin on Saturday in Valparai and the election officials and municipal office-bearers visited the election center.
During an inspection, at The Haforest Estate Primary School near Valparai, disturbing odour emitted from a locked room, the school’s nutritious meal center. An inspection revealed the presence of a dead elephant inside the room. The body of the baby elephant, who had been dead for several days was recovered.
The forest department was immediately summoned and the Manampalli forest department took up investigating the incident.
The corpse was examined in the presence of the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve Field Director and the forest vet on Saturday and investigations were carried out.
It is speculated that the baby elephant must have been trapped inside after a break-in, unable to find a way out, it subsequently died. The forest department confirmed that the dead elephant was male, between 6 to 8 years of age.
Subsequently, the body of the elephant was burnt after post mortem.
