Another Hindu leader has been arrested by the police for allegedly vandalizing the statue of St. Sebastian at the entrance of the Trinity Church in Ramanathapuram, Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: One more Hindu leader has been arrested by the police for allegedly vandalizing the statue of St. Sebastian at the entrance of Ramanathapuram's Trinity Church in Coimbatore.
Earlier, three Hindu Munnani men including a minor had been arrested for the vandalism of the statue at Trinity Church in Coimbatore and the police were on the lookout for the fourth man belonging to the same party. Maruthachalamurthy who had been in hiding has been arrested by the Ramanathapuram police.
On the midnight of January 23, the St. Sebastian statue placed at the entrance of the Holy Trinity Church in Ramanathapuram was vandalized by miscreants. The issue was strongly condemned by Christian organisations, political and non-political entities.
Based on the CCTV footage in the vicinity, the Ramanathapuram police nabbed a 16-year-old boy and a man named Madan Kumar belonging to Hindu Munnani, a right-wing party in the city. The duo confessed that they, along with Deepak and Moorthy of the same right-wing outfit, were involved in the vandalism. They also confessed that Deepak was the one who damaged the statue. Following their confession, the police arrested Deepak on Thursday, while Moorthy had been at large.
In an unexpected plot twist, the arrested admitted to damaging the statue to seek revenge for the Ariyalur student’s suicide. Allegations are rife that the student was forced by the school administration to convert to Christianity. The three men who had been arrested earlier were produced before the judge, and the 16-year-old has been lodged in the Juvenile Observation home. Madan Kumar and Deepak were lodged in the city’s central prison.
