In connection with the issue, three people including a minor has been arrested and remanded. The accused confessed that they vandalised the St.Sebastian statue at the Trinity Church here as an act of revenge for the Ariyalur girl suicide over alleged forced conversion.
Coimbatore: Three Hindu Munnani men including a minor has been arrested in connection with vandalising a Statue at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, here. The police are on the look out for another man belonging to the same party.
On the midnight of January 23, the St. Sebastian statue placed at the entrance ofthe Holy Trinity Church in Ramanathapuram, here was vandalized and damaged by miscreants. The issue was strongly condemned by Christian organisations, political and non-political entities.
Based on the CCTV footages in the vicinity, the Ramanathapuram police nabbed a 16-year-old boy and a man named Madan Kumar belonging to Hindu Munnani, a right wing party, here.
The duo confessed that they, along with Deepak and Moorthy of the same right wing outfit were involved in the statue vandalism. They also confessed that Deepak was the one who damaged the Statue, in particular. Following their confession , the policearrested Deepak on Thursday, while Moorthy is still at large.
In an unexpected plot twist, the arrested admitted to damaging the statue to seek revenge for the Ariyalur student’s suicide. Allegations are rife that the student was forced by the School administration to convert to Christianity.
The arrested were produced before the judge and the 16-year-old has been lodged in the Juvenile Observation home. And, Madan Kumar and Deepak were lodged in the City’s central prison.
