The urban local body elections are to be held in Tamil Nadu in February as per the announcement of the State Election Commissioner Palanikumar and the district administration has put in place twenty-four flying squads.
Coimbatore: Twenty-four flying squads have been deployed in Coimbatore city for the urban local body elections. The election commission has directed that valid documents of source of cash have to be produced by individuals carrying cash above value of 50,000.
The Tamil Nadu State Election Commissioner Palanikumar announced that the urban local body elections would be held in a single phase on February 19 in Tamil Nadu. Following the announcement of the election, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force. A total of 24 flying squads have been formed in Coimbatore as part of election preparedness.
In order to prevent the distribution of money and gifts in exchange for votes, it has been announced that if more than 50,000 cash is carried without valid documents, the money will be seized.
In the state, the local polls were on hold due to various reasons, despite the expiry of the term of office. Now, following the announcements, the political parties will announce candidates on Thursday. The elections will be held for 21 Corporations, 138 Municipalities, and 490 Town Panchayats in Tamil Nadu, on February 19.
Direct elections for 811 positions are being held in 7 Municipalities, 33 Town Panchayats in Coimbatore. Nomination papers will be received from 20 constituencies for 100 Wards in Coimbatore. An Assistant Election Officer will be appointed for 5 Wards and nominations will be received from Friday.
