Coimbatore: The tuberculosis infection that was subsided few years back had an increase rate due to the pandemic in Coimbatore, resulting in 3829 people affected by the disease in 2021. This is a 9 percent increase in the number of individuals suffering from the condition in compared with the previous year.
The National Tuberculosis Prevention Programme is implemented in India in view of eradicating the disease by 2025. Under this scheme, steps are being taken to quickly identify tb patients, provide joint drug treatment.
Patients diagnosed with Tuberculosis are treated with a combination of 3 drugs Isoniazid (INH), Rifampin (RIF) and fluoroquinolones for the first 6 months. Eligable patients are given scholarships for this period of 6 months. The disease incidence which had decreased in previous years, has increased last year due to various reasons, including corona infection.
A prevention officer stated that, “In Coimbatore district, tb cases are being detected through tb prevention programme field officers and X-ray vehicles. 3,497 cases of TB were detected in 2020. But in 2021, 3,829 cases were recorded. This is 9 percent higher rate than the previous year.”
The monitoring was not entirely possible during the 2nd wave, and the officials state that TB affected persons must have unknowingly spread the infection.
