Pollachi: An awareness campaign was conducted for the Koomatti tribes of Ulandy and the Balaganar tribes of Manampalli to create awareness on Knowledge Development.
A pledge against malnutrition was given to the Koomatti and Balaganar tribes on January 21 and 22.
Obtaining permission from the Field Director S Ramasubramaniyam and Deputy Director M G Ganesan of Anamalai Tiger Reserve, the awareness campaign was held for the villagers of Koomati tribal village under Ulandy forest range and the Balaganar tribal village under Manampalli forest range. The STC Project Coordinator, Dr. T Putra Pratap, Dr. K Mohanaraj, the ICAR-SBI-STC team and Sugarcane Breeding Principal Scientist were present.
As part of the campaign, It was decided to improve knowledge skills for the tribes and a pledge against malnutrition was given for the tribals. All the tribals were provided with a nutritious drink prepared with naturally-grown sugarcane.
Those who conducted the campaign also provided seeds to the tribals and advised them to farm, cultivate and produce vegetables for their families.
30 types of materials were supplied to the tribals for cultivation such as tools like axes, baguettes and essential commodities for the tribals. Lunch was also served to the tribals at the campaign.
Efforts are on to set up libraries for the tribals in the area.
