Coimbatore: The AIADMK functionaries paid tributes to the martyrs of language movement and the former minister SP Velumani, addressing the press stated that the party stands firm on their objection towards Hindi.
Paying tributes to the martyrs of language movement, the AIADMK members gathered at the Idhaya Deivam AIADMK Office in Coimbatore, observing the sacrifices of the martyrs. The martyrs who died for Tamil language were remembered.
Addressing a press conference later, S P Velumani said the AIADMK had always paid tributes and due respect to the martyrs of the language war who sacrifiesed their lives for Tamil language. He said Coimbatore played an important role in the language war and more than 100 people had died in several areas including Pollachi. He said the DMK government was formed due to Anna's conduct of various agitations.
He added that the AIADMK is committed to the anti-Hindi stand till now.
In a subsequent interview, Kavundampalayam MLA Arun Kumar said the raid at the house of Veerapandi Town Panchayat president Jayaraman was an instigation. According to him, the move was done to disrupt the AIADMK's victory in the upcoming local body elections.
Arun Kumar accused that the ruling party was conducting raids from the former minister's houses to the union secretary, and that these allegations would be fought legally.
MLAs Amman K Arjunan, Arun Kumar and Shanmugam participated in the event, which was presided over by former minister S P Velumani.
Floral tributes werepaid to the portraits of 12 martyrs along with martyrs Natarajan and Thalamuthu.
