Valparai: The Tea Plantation Workers Protection Union is on a hunger strike in Valparai demanding that the estate owners provide the government allotted minimum wage to the plantation workers.
There are about 62 estates in Valparai, and the workers are currently being paid a minimum wage of Rs.350. The workers are provided with an increase in wages every four years based on various factors.
The estate management and the trade union federation held wage talks, after which the government announced that 425 rupees should be paid as minimum wage, which the estate management has not paid. Thus, the Tea Plantation Workers Protection Union Federation union is protesting against the Estate Management.
The protest is led by MDMK union secretary Kalyani, in which trade unions such as INTUC general secretary CITU union Dheeran, trade union, humanitarian union, and New Tamil Nadu Union are holding a joint hunger strike.
