As Pongal gift hamper distribution nears the end, ration card holders in the city have begun approaching ration shops to get their supply of essential items distributed for the cards, resulting in crowds.
Coimbatore: The distribution of pongal package was successful with a major chunk of the eligible beneficiaries receiving the hamper. People have started visiting ration shops to avail their monthly supply of essentials. This has subsequently increased crowding at the shops.
Distribution of Pongal gifts to about 10, 78,484 ration card holders (rice card holders) in the Coimbatore district was in progress since the 1st of January. As per a District Supply Officer, so far, 94% of the people have availed their Pongal hampers including the raw rice, sugarcane, pepper, jaggery, semolina, and wheat flour.
As the Pongal Package distribution is over, the regular ration essentials such as rice, palm oil, wheat, and sugar is supplied to the public at the ration shop which was temporarily suspended, has resumed now. The distribution has been in progress for the last couple of days. Public continues to throng the ration shops to receive their monthly quota of supplies.
Public waited in long queues to get the commodities from ration shops at Awarapalayam, Poomarket, R.S.Puram, Ramanathapuram, and Singanallur areas.
