A corporation official has stated that boating will resume in Periyakulam, Valankulam in Ukkadam after the spread of Covid-19 subsides.
Coimbatore: A corporation official has stated that boating will resume in Periyakulam, Valankulam in Ukkadam after the spread of Covid-19 subsides.
The Coimbatore City Corporation inaugurated the renovated Periyakulam, Selva Chintamani Lake, part of Valankulam, Kumaraswamy, and part of Selvapathi Lake for public use under the Smart City Scheme last February.
A walking path, bicycle path, seats, and shelters have been constructed on the banks of the Periyakulam. In addition, an open-air stadium, sports hall, dining halls, ferry, float restaurant, sewage treatment plant to clean the sewage mixing in the tank have been set up at a cost of Rs.62.17-crores.
Similarly, Selvachintamani Lake is renovated and upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs.31.47-crore, and the road area across Valankulam at an estimated cost of Rs.24.31-crore. The banks of Valankulam have been renovated and upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs.67.86-crores.
Selvampathi and Kumaraswamy Lakes have been renovated and upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs.31.25-crore. A boat ride test run was held at Ukkadam Periyakulam. The public had requested a permanent boat ride and this will be resumed at Ukkadam Periyakulam.
According to a source from Corporation, “No fee has been levied on the public in the six lakes renovated under Smart City Scheme in Coimbatore. The district records more number of cases of corona after Chennai. Public has been restricted in visiting these areas to control the spread of the infection. We plan to resume boating at Ukkadam Periyakulam when the corona outbreak subsides. Similarly, boating will be started in the next phase at Valankulam.”
