Industry experts in the city has stated that 30,000 guest workers have travelled back to their hometowns due to a lack of safety in accommodations at workplace.
Coimbatore: The industrialists have stated that as many as 30,000 guest workers have travelled back to their home towns due to lack of Covid-19 safety norms in their accommodations at the workplace.
The guest workers employed in the industries in Coimbatore have been heading back home in groups fearing the rapid increase in Covid-19 cases here, stating there is not much safety in their accommodations.
Vice President, Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association, (TANSTIA), Surulivel stated that industries that have employed guest workers will suffer in the coming months as they are heading back to their home towns in clusters fearing Covid-19.
“More than three-and-a-half-lakh guest workers are employed in industries functioning under manufacturing and service sector divisions in Coimbatore district. The rapid spread of corona infection on a daily basis has left the workers feeling insecure and no safety at the places they are staying. This has subsequently led many of them to move back to their home towns in clusters. Most times, workers who leave like this, return after three months.”
A thousand people leave by train every day. So far, 30,000 workers have gone to their hometowns. And in the coming months, the industries which have employed guest workers will face a critical situation.
He demanded that the Government of Tamil Nadu creates adequate awareness among these workers and boost their confidence. This will reduce the number of workers returning to their hometowns.
While on the other hand, Prabhu Damodaran, Convenor of the Indian Texpreneurs Federation, (ITF), said, “ Unlike the first two waves, by the third wave outbreak the guest workers have a proper understanding of the infection, adopting necessary safety measures and maintaining continuous employment and good conditions and have not yet sought to reach their hometowns in the textile industry. They stay here and continue their work. “
