Two persons per bull, Jallikattu begins at Chettipalayam in Coimbatore with fervour

Minister Senthil Balaji inaugurated the traditional bull-taming sport of Tamil Nadu, Jallikattu, that began at 7 am in Chettipalayam with 300 tamers



Coimbatore: Jallikattu contest began at 7 am in Chettipalayam with 300 tamers after Minister Senthil Balaji inaugurated the contest on Friday.

The traditional bull-taming sport, Jallikattu, is conducted by The Coimbatore District Jallikattu Association under the supervision of the Administration of Coimbatore District at Chettipalayam, Coimbatore.



The Tamil Nadu Electricity, Prohibition, and Excise Minister Senthil Balaji inaugurated the Jallikattu function. A total of 700 bulls and 300 tamers are participating and 2 persons per bull are permitted.



The participants and those accompanying the animals were instructed to bring certificates of two doses of the vaccination, and the RTPCR negative certificate, with a test done in the last 24-hours. 

District Collector Sameeran had directed that the officials and journalists attending the event also produce their double dose vaccine certificates. Accordingly, only those who furnished the certificate were permitted at the venue.

The bulls from regions outside of Coimbatore arrived last evening. Medical facilities have been made on behalf of a private hospital. No audience was permitted to witness this edition of the sport due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Jallikattu competition is being telecasted live on television.



A total of 2,000 police personnel are deployed in the area for security purposes Saravanampatti Perumal Temple bull was the first to take the field. By the end of the first round, 12 people were successful in taming the bull and qualified themselves for the final round.

So far, 376 bulls have been fielded. Of these, 15 have been selected for the final round, at the end of the third round. Contenders with green baniyan are in the fray for the 4th round.

A total of 124 bulls have been issued gold coins so far.
