In a tragic incident, six persons were killed as they drowned in the Amaravathi River on the 17th.
About 30 people from Annamalai Garden, Iduvai in Palladam constituency of Tirupur went to participate in the goat-sacrifice ceremony at the Muniswaran Temple in Mamparai in Dindigul on the 17th.
The group reportedly returned to Tirupur via Dharapuram and made a pit stop at the Amaravathi River near Dharapuram at around 4:30 pm.As they were bathing, one of them drowned, as he approached the deeper area. Those who attempted to save him also drowned.
The fire brigade was informed of the incident by those who witnessed the incident. The Dharapuram fire brigade rushed immediately and rescued two persons, Saran and Jeeva, alive. Tragically, 6 persons Amrit Krishnan, Chakravarman, Sridhar, Ranjith, Yuvan and Mohan were recovered dead.
The AIADMK MLA and former Minister from Palladam, M. S. M. Anandan, personally visited the families and offered his condolences.
The families of the victims petitioned requesting financial assistance and employment. The MLA received the petition and said efforts would be made to take action.
Former Panchayat Corporation Secretary Chenniappan, District Councillor Velkumar Saminathan, Iduvai Muthukumarasamy, District Fisheries Secretary Palaniappan, Iduvai Panchayat Sabha Deputy Chairman Paramasivam and others were present.
