Covid-19 pandemic outbreak has impacted both the passenger and cargo movements at the Coimbatore International Airport.
Coimbatore: The International Airport at Coimbatore is serving the aviation needs of people from surrounding 7 districts. Before covid-19 pandemic outbreak, each day, on an average, more than 35 scheduled flights operated, and more than 70 takeoffs and landings were witnessed.
Apart from this non-scheduled flight also operated from the Coimbatore International Airport. From the first wave of Covid-19 pandemic outbreak, the flight operations at the CIA is severely impacted.
During the month of May in 2020 and 2021, only 5 flights operated everyday from the airport. Special vaccination camps followed by the relaxation of norms imposed by the state and central governments helped witness steady growth both in the passenger and cargo movements.
Recently the daily flight operations increased to 25 which included new flight services in the domestic side to Tirupati, Goa and restarting of the services to Pune and various other destinations which were stopped due to pandemic outbreak.
This gave hope to air passengers and the aviation enthusiasts. But, all of a sudden the third wave 'Covid-19' outbreak followed by 'Omicron' virus spread, which is having an impact on the flight moments at the Coimbatore International Airport.
Many flight services in domestic sector are temporarily stopped. At present only 15 flights, subject to services being cancelled, are operated every day. The daily 'Covid- 19' infection rate continues to spike across Tamilnadu and it is expected that the flight operations will further be reduced in the upcoming days.
