Coimbatore: The railway police officers acting on a tip-off received stating ganja was smuggled in the Jharkhand-Alleppey express train, seized 7-kg of the contraband worth over one lakh on Thursday morning.
The city police received information that ganja was being smuggled in the express train running from Dhanpad in Jharkhand to Alappuzha in Kerala via Coimbatore. Railway Security Force police acting on the tip-off raided the train at the Coimbatore Junction at around 8:15 am on Thursday and found packets of the contraband stranded below the seat no.1 in D/T3 compartment.
As many as 7 packets of cannabis was seized, weighing, 7-kg, worth 1,40,000 rupees.
Investigations revealed that the smugglers, reportedly north Indians, fled after sensing the police raid. The consignment was being transported to Kerala. Investigation is on to nab the smugglers.
