Coimbatore: With rising Covid-19 cases, the industries are preparing themselves for the challenges they will face, as the employees will be resuming work from Monday after Pongal Holidays.
The number of coronavirus cases have been increasing in the Coimbatore district in the last few days. The industry said the spread of infection has created a challenge as all industries are scheduled to start functioning in full swing from Monday after Pongal.
Ramesh Babu, President of Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA), stated, “60 percent of the workers have returned to work after Pongal festival and 60 percent to 70 percent of the industries are functioning in the district. Employees who had been to their hometowns for Pongal will return this weekend, and all the industries will start functioning in full swing starting next week.”
He mentioned that the current increase in covid-19 cases is a cause of great concern. Adding that all industries have taken precautionary measures, workers with symptoms have voluntarily taken leave. Most industries have purchased the testing kit, as the mass purchase has reduced the cost of the kit, thus, enabling easy screening of the workers who report to work with symptoms of the infection.
President of Southern Indian Engineering Manufacturers Association (SIEMA), K. V. Karthik said that most of the workers i.e., 90 percent to 95 percent employed in the industries in the district have received both doses of vaccine.
“All the industries are following the guidelines issued by the Government of Tamil Nadu on the spread of diseases. Industries in Coimbatore will face a lot of challenges in the coming weeks as the spread of infection has been on the rise for a few days. Everyone is ready to face it."
James, President of the Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Micro Enterprises stated that “The workers who visit their hometowns every year for Pongal festival will come back at least 10 days later. Production work in Coimbatore industries will begin in full swing from next week. To date, there has been no major impact on industries in Coimbatore district, even though the infection is on the rise."
