Coimbatore: An official from the Coimbatore Corporation stated that lanes for cycling will be set up in 26 places in the city and the process will commence soon, under the Smart City project.
The Union Government is working with the voluntary organization of Germany to implement the project in major cities in India including Odisha, Kochi, and Coimbatore. As part of this, a special road and pavements for cycling for a distance of 1.2-km was constructed on Crosscut Road in Coimbatore in January last year. These paths were used by people for 10 days as a test run. These roads will be permanently constructed on behalf of the Coimbatore Corporation and will be dedicated for public use.
A Corporation official stated "In the first phase, the project will be implemented at 26 places in Coimbatore city including at Big Bazaar Road, Raja Street, Vadavalli, Thudiyalur and Saibaba Colony. Work in this direction will start soon."
