The corporation has reversed the decision to collect parking charges in corporation areas after no contractor paid interest in taking up the project and there were no consultations with the transport police, stakeholders and traders.
Coimbatore: The plan to collect street parking fee stands suspended by Coimbatore Corporation. The decision was announced on Monday.
At the Municipal Corporation Council meeting held on November 30th, the Corporation decided to set parking charges for two-wheelers and four-wheelers in the city and collect the fee. It was decided that the four-wheelers will be charged at 30 or 40 per hour and two-wheelers at 10 per hour.
However, the corporation stated that the reasons for reversing the decision was that the Coimbatore City Transport Police, traders, and some stakeholders were not consulted on the locations selected for parking to begin with. Furthermore, the Corporation also did not receive interest from the contractors to implement the scheme.
A few years ago, the corporation gave up charging the residents to collect domestic waste generated. Further, after the Government of India framed the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, the Corporation took steps to collect a fee for transporting household waste in 2017.
It is said that the Corporation enacted laws to collect between 10 and 30 from each home, on the basis of property tax. This was once again suspended after political parties condemned the move through protests and petitions. Subsequently, only 1-crore was collected while the expected amount collection was 30-crore.
The Corporation is said to have decided to recollect the fee, in accordance with the decision taken at the recent council meeting, after not charging any fees for nearly three years. It is estimated that the move will generate revenue of 13-crores per annum. A source from the corporation also stated that this suspension is temporary and the corporation can bring about a change in the collection of fees.
