Pollachi: The family of the mahout who was killed by his elephant in Kozhikamuthi Elephant Camp demanded that the government offers them relief.
In an unfortunate incident, Ashok, a 12-year-old elephant at the Kozhikamuthi elephant camp in Ulaandy range of Anamalai Tiger Reserve, near TopSlip, reportedly attacked its mahout, in which the man died.
There are 27 elephants maintained on behalf of the Forest Department in the camp. Ashok, the elephant was brought to the camp five years back from the Vandalur Zoo which was tended by Arumugam (45) and Murugan of Kozhikamuthi hill village.

The elephant which was taken for grazing into the forest on Sunday morning as usual, after feeding attacked Murugan out of the blue. Arumugam, in an attempt to save Murugan, was also attacked, in which he suffered serious injuries in his chest and abdomen.
The people around were immediately informed of the incident and Arumugam was rushed to the Pollachi Government Hospital. The doctors however, declared Arumugam dead. The Anaimalai police arrived at the spot and recovered the body of the deceased Arumugam and handed it over for post mortem. Investigation is underway.
The people of the hill village, have demanded that the state government provides financial relief to the victim’s family.
