Coimbatore: The District Corporation officers have collected a fine of 84,700 on Wednesday alone, as there were huge crowds in bazaars ahead of Pongal.

The streets of Covai were jam-packed ahead of Pongal especially, Oppanakara Street, Road, Crosscut Road, 100 ft Road, Gandhipuram, Town Hall and Ukkadam. With the pandemic still prevailing and the third wave outbreak, large crowds of people gathered in a place has come as a shock to the officers.

People were seen outside in clusters for various reasons like the purchase of new clothes and goods for Pongal. The Government of Tamil Nadu has advised that people should avoid gathering to control the spread of coronavirus. Despite this, people continue to crowd in public places, violating norms. 20 Flying Squads have been formed on behalf of the Corporation to monitor the increase in crowd and compliance with corona regulations.

Apart from this, committees, led by the revenue department and police, constituting various department officials is formed to monitor movement of people. Awareness campaigns are conducted through loudspeakers in vehicles educating the public to avoid crowds and urging them to adhere to corona norms. Penalties are imposed on violators.

However, people continue to crowd in public places, violating norms, making it difficult for officials to control crowd.

A Corporation official stated that the textile shops, commercial establishments, and shops in Coimbatore should follow the guidelines of the government and customers should be informed about this periodically over the loudspeaker.

“We are advising the public to avoid gathering but the bazaars are still crowded. We are constantly monitoring people if they are wearing masks and maintaining social distancing. Penalties are also imposed on violators. A fine of 84,700 was imposed in the corporation areas in a single day on Wednesday."
