The Thai Thirunaal or the Pongal festival is celebrated this year on Friday, and the sale of sugarcane, pots to cook Pongal, turmeric bunch tied in the pot surged at the Thennamplayam vegetable Market. A pair of red sugarcane is being sold from Rs.50 to Rs.100 and turmeric bunch at Rs.30.
In addition, a bunch of flowers, Avarampoo and neem required for the ‘Kappu’ is sold at Rs.10.
Pongal is an auspicious festival when the farmers thank nature, acting as a source of agriculture and worship it. Pongal is also an important festival of Tamils. The state has been gearing up for the festival since a month. It is an age old tradition to worship nature along with red sugarcane and a bunch of turmeric tied in pots while preparing Pongal. The sales of these Pongal items will be brisk two days prior to the festival every year.
The public visiting the Thennampalayam Vegetable Market are advised to wear face shields on behalf of Tirupur Corporation and those who do not wear face shields are denied entry into the market. With Pongal only one day away, people are flocking to buy goods.
