Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister, Senthil Balaji has warned of strict action against those violating Covid restrictions and also mentioned that 12, 059 beds are ready for use in the city.
A review meeting was held at the Coimbatore District Collectorate on Tuesday morning, led by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Prohibition and Excise Minister, Senthil Balaji along with all departmental officials with regard to Covid-19 prevention measures.
Addressing a press conference in the city, Minister Senthil Balaji stated that the review meeting is being held in all the districts as per the Chief Minister's orders, like the one held in Coimbatore on Tuesday with officials from all departments. A total of 12,059 beds, including 7,368 Covid treatment beds have been prepped up by the Government administration and 4,691 beds are ready for use in private hospitals.
Overall, 4,397 oxygen beds and 853 beds have been placed in the Intensive Care Unit. The district administration is also ready to increase the bed numbers immediately, if necessary.
Speaking on the administration of vaccines thus far in the city, the Minister said, "27,90,400 persons are eligible for vaccination in Coimbatore, while 27,02,946 immunizations have been administered vaccines. Discussions on inoculating 87,454 people at their homes were held on Tuesday. 81 percent have been administered the second jab here.
The daily number of Covid tests done in the city range from 7000 to 9000. Steps are being taken to increase it to 12,000 in the coming days. 11 check posts in the district have been equipped with surveillance cameras and steps to directly monitor them from the Collectorate are also taken.
"It has been decided to test persons accompanying Covid patients in private hospitals and Government hospitals. Similarly, suggestions have been taken to create awareness among the public through local television. 152 Special Officers have been appointed totally including 100 Special Officers for 100 wards in the Corporation, 33 officers in 33 Town Panchayats, 7 Special Officers for 7 Municipalities and 12 Special Officers for 12 Panchayats.
Action will be taken to share and control the information through WhatsApp Groups. The existing 2,206 medical personnel involved in preventive measures in the city have signed a contract for an additional two months. A total of 3,311 medical personnel are currently available post recruitment of 1,105 new members," stated the Minister.
The Minister also urged the public to strictly follow the precautions announced by the Government. He said that the civilians should adhere to the complete curfew on Sundays and avoid gathering in grocery stores as much as possible, especially the day before the curfew. “In case of violating the norms, strict action will be taken. As far as liquor shops are concerned, a review meeting will be held and procedures will be implemented as per the directions of the Government. 1,671 of 70,950 persons who are eligible for booster doses have been vaccinated with the boosters.
There are currently two Government testing labs and 28 private labs for Omicron testing. International passengers can also contact the control center if they need vaccination. As far as Jallikattu is concerned, the Jallikattu executives and function committees have promised to discuss and let us know of their decisions, after which the district administration will take necessary steps," added Minister Senthil Balaji.
He also monitored the CCTV live streams from check posts, at the Corona Control Center at the Coimbatore Collectorate.
District Collector G S Sameeran and CCMC Commissioner Raja Gopal Sunkara were also present.
