The TN Health Minister, Ma. Subramanian assured that there was less chance of imposing a complete lockdown in the State and 85 percent of the current cases of Omicron are the ones with ‘S’ gene-affected persons.
Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ma. Subramanian who briefed the media in Chennai stated that the chances of currently imposing a complete lockdown in the State were less.
Ma. Subramanian stated that there was no possibility of declaring a complete curfew in the State in view of the livelihood of people. He added that there were 85 percent cases of Omicron and 15 percent cases of Delta-affected persons among the Covid patients, who have an affected S gene.
The TN Health Minister personally distributed pulse oximeters to the Covid patients at Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai. He later inspected the Saravana Counselling Centre at Adyar Regional Office, where the Chennai Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Health Secretary Radhakrishnan and South Chennai MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian were present.
Minister Ma. Subramanian later addressed the media at a press conference stating that the State has been recording over 2000 cases on a daily basis. However, the affected persons are in home isolation as per ICMR advice since symptoms are mild. “Covid patients in home isolation should test oxygen levels with the pulse oximeter in the mornings and evenings, and should immediately approach a hospital in case if the level drops below 92,” advised the TN Health Minister.
Currently, 26,000 people are undergoing Covid treatment of which about 21,987 are in domestic isolation. People with comorbidities have been advised to get help at the hospitals while those with mild symptoms have been asked to isolate at home. 178 volunteers have been appointed to monitor those under home isolation in Chennai.
Ma. Subramanian further stated that the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister will inaugurate 11 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. The Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate through video conferencing from Delhi. The Union Health Minister is scheduled to arrive at Chennai on Wednesday, between 4-5 pm. 1450 students are to be enrolled in 11 colleges.

Since the infection is due to 'S' gene damage which is a symptom of Omicron, there are no separate tests being done. The Minister also added that samples from clusters are forwarded for tests as there are threats that hint at the spread of new variants.
Ma. Subramanian also assured that there are fewer chances of a complete lockdown in the State since the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M K Stalin is determined not to affect the livelihood of the people. "With the public’s support, there would be only limited restrictions in the State and there will be no need to increase curfew restrictions. There is no possibility of a complete curfew after Pongal. Discussions on conducting the Mega Vaccine Camp on the next Saturday after Pongal is underway," he added.
