Can biryanis be a disappointment too? Excessive smoke from biryani outlet in Coimbatore disturbs residences

The residents near a biryani kitchen in the city have submitted a petition to the Collector seeking action, as excessive smoke let out from the place has been causing nuisance to the public nearby.

Coimbatore: The residents near a large biryani kitchen in the city have submitted a petition to the District Collector seeking action as excessive smoke is let out from the place has been causing a nuisance to the public in the vicinity.

A petition has been submitted to the District Collector to take steps to relocate the biryani preparation centre located in a residential area that has been emitting large quantities of smoke and waste.

Over 50 civilians from the area under the chairmanship of Social Justice Party West Zone Secretary Adi Ganesan and District Secretary Jai Bhim Baalu submitted a petition to the District Collector Sameeran seeking respite.

A biryani preparation centre owned by a private company has been functioning since August last year at the Krishnasamy Konar Estate area. The Mount Garden apartment near Saibaba Colony, Chinnammal Road, Krishnasamy Konar Estate, Ward No.8 of Coimbatore Corporation inhabits more than 1,000 people in more than 200 houses. A large number of retired government and private employees and elderly people are living here.

“All the dishes are cooked using a firewood stove in this kitchen and plastic waste, cloths with waste oils are used to burn the firewood stove, causing a dark cloud of smoke. The area looks covered by dark clouds for about 1 km. The biryani production hall, which operates round the clock, produces a large quantity of non-vegetarian foods. The chickens kept in captivity are slaughtered in the building itself and the wastewater is mixed directly into the corporation sewer without treatments.” the petition stated.

The residents lamented that this has been causing strong odour, suffocating the public, in addition to the masala fragrances that are being prepared here. The public is forced to shut down ventilation in their houses, rented tenants have moved out of the area and the vehicular traffic is congested, in the already narrow road. Trucks transporting biryani containers keep moving back and forth in the street, threatening public’s lives.

The kitchen has also been causing noise troubles as the utensils are dragged, employees communicate through microphones and speakers. The company promised to set up chimneys to let the smoke out, but no action has been taken so far, added the petitioners.

The petition said steps should be taken to shift the large-scale biryani kitchen functioning in the residential area, the smoke emission should be brought under control, and waste be removed soon.
