Coimbatore: The local police arrested a godman who posed as a central government official and tried to extort money from handloom silk producers in Sirumugai, Mettupalayam.
Rajkumar of Kichakathiyur area has an ashram in the same area at Sirumugai near Mettupalayam. Reportedly, Rajkumar posed as an All India Consumer Protection Officer to the handloom producers in the area and threatened them stating they were selling hoax silk sarees. He demanded relevant documents and allegedly threatened Nagaraj, a trader who owned a private silk textile shop in Sirumugai to offer money.
Rajkumar, also had a sticker in his car stating he was an official from the central government and accused Nagaraj of cheating public by selling pseudo silk sarees.
Nagaraj, chief of the All Handloom Silk Saree Manufacturing and Vendors Association lodged a complaint with the Sirumugai police, based on which the cops investigated and arrested the godman Rajkumar, who was hiding in Kichakathiyur.
Rajkumar has been booked under three sections of misusing and cheating in the name of the Centre. He was produced before the court and is lodged in prison.
