Tirupur: The power loom owners went on an indefinite strike demanding hike in wages for the weavers in Palladam.

Power loom owners demanded wage hike and went on to stage an indefinite strike here on Sunday as the production worth 60-crore per day has been impacted, risking the jobs of 4-lakh workers.

The power loom owners in Tirupur, Coimbatore districts weave for wages, have 3-lakh power looms and employ 4-lakh workers directly and indirectly. The workers produce gada cloth and about 2-crore meters of gada cloth is produced on a daily basis in Tirupur and Coimbatore. Wages are set based on this and the workers are paid on the set basis.

Tragically, there has been no hike in the wages for seven years since 2014, due to which several have changed their employment. Most have also lost their ancestral wealth in order to repay the loans obtained.

The wages were increased at 20 percent for Palladam area, and 23 percent for Somanur, at a result of the talks held at the Coimbatore Collectorate on 24th of November in 2021 in the presence of the State Minister, District Collector and labour welfare department. Several phases of talks demanding a new wage hike were held since 2020.However, the power loom owners are engaged in an indefinite strike from Sunday, 9th of January, to protest against the textile manufacturers who are delaying its implementation.

Two lakh power looms have been stopped in Tirupur, Coimbatore districts, affecting ₹ 60-crore production. About 4-lakh workers, two lakh workers employed directly and 2-lakh workers indirectly employed, are about to lose jobs.
