Manikandan, (17), and Vijayakrishnan, (18) were killed on the spot as a rail engine from Mettupalayam to Coimbatore hit the duo on Saturday around 7.30 pm while they walking on the railway tracks near Koundampalayam. Srikanth, (18), who had accompanied them, escaped in the nick of the moment as he noticed the engine and got off the track in the last minute.
Reportedly, Srikanth and Vijaykrishnan are first-year students at a private college while Manikandan is looking for jobs. The trio was immersed in their phones, which led them not notice the rail engine arriving, costing the lives of two.
Mettupalayam Railway Police rushed to the spot after receiving information about the matter. The corpses were recovered and sent for post mortem. The Railway police are investigating the accident.
