The Podanur police are on the lookout for the mysterious men who garlanded the Statue of Periyar in front of the Thanthai Periyar Pagutharive Padippagam in Vellalore area of Coimbatore and covered it with saffron powder.
The public passing through the area this morning noticed the statue’s state and informed the administrators. Subsequently, the administrators informed the Podanur police.
The Dravidian parties gathered at the venue, demonstrated against the incident and dispersed after the police assured appropriate action would be taken.
Subsequently, police are investigating if any CCTV cameras have been installed in the area and whether anyone was in the area during the night.
While a full curfew is being observed today, such an incident has created a stir in Coimbatore.
