Raman, (55), of Nallampalayam, Coimbatore served as a guard at the godown on Adidas Street. On the 24th of March, 2017, Chandran, (43), a porter from the Ettimadai region who arrived near the godown entered into a dispute with Raman demanding money for liquor.
Raman, on refusing to give him money received severe blows and was thrown to the ground by Chandran. In a fit of rage, Chandran killed Raman with a huge rock. The Racecourse Police who registered a case and investigated the matter, arrested Chandran in 2018 after intensive investigation as there was no immediate clue in connection with the murder.
The investigation revealed that Raman was also abused by caste name. Chandran was charged under The Prevention of Atrocities Act (the SC/ST Act) and murder. While the trial was being held in Coimbatore district court, the final hearing was held on Thursday.
District Magistrate Sakthivel, who was hearing the case, sentenced the accused Chandran to life imprisonment for murder, a fine of Rs 1,000, another life sentence under the SC/ST Act and issued a verdict with a double life sentence.
Chandran, who was sentenced to double life imprisonment, is lodged in Coimbatore prison.
