The Farmers Association’s Coimbatore Chief has sought the state government’s help to make way to employ the 100-day workers in agriculture as there is a shortage of workers and also to improve agriculture in the city.

Coimbatore: The Farmers Association’s Coimbatore Chief has sought the state government to make way to employ the 100-day workers in agriculture as there is a shortage of workers in this sector.

Addressing a press conference at his office in Race Course in Coimbatore on Thursday, Farmers Association Coimbatore District President S. Palaniswami stated that, “Turmeric, yellow corn, maize, etc., have been cultivated as rain-fed crops in the Kongu regions like Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode. All the crops have now achieved good yield.”

“However, the farmers are facing various difficulties in safeguarding the crops, as there is a shortage in workers. This is a major drawback, especially in the urban areas, in the municipal areas, where turmeric is sown as part of the agricultural work being done.”

He added that, despite being ready for harvest, due to shortage of persons, the farmers are unable to harvest and sought the government to protect the welfare of the farmers and address their grievances.

He said that the employees who are under the 100-day work programme should be deployed for agricultural work. They are mostly involved in garbage disposal, cutting of unwanted branches, desilting of canals and other works. The Farmers association head added that if the 100-day workers are employed for agricultural purposes, agriculture will flourish again and the country will prosper.
