Coimbatore: Millions of workers are employed across the Tirupur district in tens of thousands of knitwear and allied companies. The price of yarn, the most important raw material for knitwear production, has been on the rise for the past one year, with sales currently hovering between 330 and 380, which has led to delays in completing pre-orders and receiving new orders.
This has already been brought to the notice of the Central Government several times and a one-day strike and hunger strike on November 26 was held. All the knitting companies in Tirupur district will go on a strike on January 17 and 18 to bring to the notice of the Central Government that there is a danger of a complete paralysis of the knitting industry due to the yarn prices. The Central Government should immediately focus on abolishing the 11 per cent tax on cotton imports, with the aim of stopping production.
