Coimbatore: The State Government has issued a ban on the inflow of poultry and its products into Coimbatore from Kerala following bird flu in Kerala.
After ducks were diagnosed with flu in Alleppey, the state Animal Husbandry Department has taken several steps to prevent the spread of bird flu in Tamil Nadu. 26 temporary check posts have been set up near Kerala borders in the city including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Theni, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts bordering Kerala. Round-the-clock monitoring teams have been formed.
1,061 committees have been formed and checking officers immediately sent back vehicles carrying poultry, duck and other related products back to Kerala to avoid infection in the state.Vehicles entering Tamil Nadu are also allowed entry only after proper disinfection. The Principal Disease Diagnostic Officer has been appointed as the Officer in Charge of the Veterinary and Disease Diagnostic Division at Saidapet, Chennai. Measures have been taken on behalf of the Environment and Forest Departments to inform veterinary officers immediately in case of bird flu and death in bird sanctuaries and zoos. The Government has also stated that in order to bring fodder, chicks and eggs from states other than Kerala, a certificate from the appropriate officers has to be obtained to procure the products. The Veterinary Department has directed all poultry farms in the State to adopt intensive biosecurity procedures.
