The Coimbatore BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan has sought the Chief Minister’s intervention in prioritizing fishermen cooperative societies of the state in provision of algae fishing lease.
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan has sought the Chief Minister’s intervention in prioritizing Fishermen Cooperative societies of the state in provision of algae fishing lease.
Priority was given to the Fishermen Cooperative societies in Tamil Nadu, in suitable water bodies that are under the control of Public Works Department of Government of Tamil Nadu.As per G.O. No.332 issued by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries on 17-11-1993, priority has been accorded to Fishermen Cooperative Societies for the lease.
She stated, “The members of the Fishermen Cooperative Society came together to breed and sell fish in the water bodies by paying the lease amount fixed by the government.”
“In a circular issued by the Commissioner of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare to all the District Collectors on 22nd of December last year, the President of Coimbatore Taluk Fishermen's Cooperative Society, M Balamurugan and the people of the fishing community in Coimbatore South constituency have brought it to my notice.”
Vanathi stated that the livelihood of 761 fishermen who are members of this Cooperative Society will be severely affected if there is general lease for the water bodies in Coimbatore Taluk.She added that the general lease has further shocked the fishermen who are already suffering due to the pandemic.
She called out for the Chief Minister MK Stalin’s intervention in the interest of the fishermen, and sought priority to the Fishermen Cooperative Societies as usual in the auction of fish algae leases in the water bodies to protect their livelihood and provide a solution.
