Coimbatore: Pongal gift items are being distributed in Tamil Nadu following the launch of the Pongal gift scheme at the Government of Tamil Nadu ration shops.
Minister Senthil Balaji launched the project in Coimbatore.
He initially started the project in Sulur and Ramanathapuram, following the launch at Somanur.
He met reporters in Ramanathapuram. Speaking on the occasion, he said that Pongal gifts will be given to 10.78-lakh family card holders by the 10th. Its value is 58.02-crores.
In the matter of setting up a high voltage power tower he informed that the farmers have given only general demands. Steps will be taken to expedite the payment of compensation to those who do not receive it. Those who have already received compensation amount are now demanding more money. It is customary to seek redress in court for additional compensation.
Some organizations misrepresent that they are receiving additional compensation. Farmers have not yet provided a list of those to whom compensation has been waived and steps are being taken to meet the demands of the grinder manufacturing body, informed the minister.

When asked if anyone had complained that the application form was not available or if anyone had said that the form had not been received, he said no one spoke when the tender was opened. For 10 years revenue was Rs.312-crore, last year only Rs.89-crore was received and 1,551 shops had a bar without tender. He said action has been taken against 134 employees who sold at high prices.
Moving the focus to Jallikattu, he said that if everyone is to be given a token for the Coimbatore Jallikattu tournament, Jallikkattu will have to be held for 2, 3 days. He said the decision on whether Jallikkattu would take place would be taken only after the release of the government's guidelines.
