Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Jallikattu Youth Council submitted a petition alleging that only a particular section of people are being issued tokens for the upcoming Jallikattu competitions in the city.
The Tamil Nadu Jallikattu Youth Council trust was registered with the Sub Registrar's Office in Gandhipuram in 2019, to create awareness about the welfare of the herdsmen and jallikattu bull rearing practices in the traditional sport of Jallikattu. Members and volunteers from various districts work for the council.
“The applications of the players were refused to be accepted, when our council members contacted the function committee to participate in the Jallikattu competition near LNT Bypass Road in Coimbatore this year. Therefore, the District Collector should take appropriate action and properly issue tokens to the players”, read the petition.
The petitioners alleged of major irregularities and stated that tokens were issued only to particular organizations. Highlighting that many farmers are affected by this, they demanded that the tokens should be issued at the public place where Jallikattu is being held. The council members stated that the tokens are given in various other districts for the contest that will be hosted here.
Adding that political interference is also due to the intervention of some organizations, the council asked for a first come first serve basis to be issued tokens.
They warned of a demonstration across the state on behalf of the council if there is no solution and stated that Jallikattu should not be viewed as politics.
