Coimbatore: The Slum Clearance Board officials has issued notice to the residents in Selvapuram Housing Unit to vacate houses as the buildings are in a poor condition and are feared to collapse anytime.
About 292 houses were constructed 52 years ago in the Ukkadam Slater House area on behalf of the Housing Board in Coimbatore, 350 houses were constructed on the south side of Perur Road and 782 houses were constructed in the north. The houses were later brought under the responsibility of the slum clearance board. The board ordered the evacuation of these tenements, which are in a state of disrepair and demolition.
However, the residents continue to stay at the housing unit, after which the slum board has issued notices asking them to vacate the houses.They have also issued notices with posters and banners in the residential area. Arrangements are being made to vacate 1,424 houses. Officials expect to vacate residents soon.
Venkatesan, Executive Engineer, Slum Clearance Board, stated that the board is ready to construct new apartments in the same place and has asked the residents to evacuate as the conditions of the buildings are a concern.
Venkatesan said “A new, individual house will be constructed at 400 sq. ft, which is currently on 290 sq. ft. But, many of the residents did not come forward to vacate their homes. If vacated, houses will be constructed and handed over formally in 2 years.The houses should be vacated as soon as possible.”
He demanded that the public staying there should understand the situation and cooperate, only then will new houses will be built with quality facilities.
He said if the houses are vacated, the demolition and construction of new houses will start soon.
