Coimbatore: The Rotary 3201 Awards Ceremony was held at a private hall on Avinashi Road to present the award of "Best Postman" to 60 postal workers who excelled in the Coimbatore division during Covid-19. Coimbatore MP PR Natarajan was the special guest and presented the awards.
Speaking earlier in the event, MP PR Natarajan said, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the administrator who told the Rotary Club of the idea of honouring postal staff. These postal employees are the bridge to the people. Knowing the ingenuity of the postal staff that no one sees us, they are holding this award ceremony. It is always the public sector companies of the nation that will serve the people without delay in any calamity. Air India, a public sector undertaking, served the public sector banks, the postal service and government hospitals serviced the people, during the pandemic.”
"That is why we are emphasizing the need to protect public sector companies. There are 3,760 post offices in rental buildings across the country. This will save you a lot of money when you run your own building. That money can be used for the development of the sector. At our level committee meeting held even recently all the post offices will stand erect in their own building in five years if a Member of Parliament from Parliamentary constituency development decides to build one post office every year. But, many MPs are not ready to accept this. Last time, I allocated funds for a post office in Uppilipalayam area but there was an incident where the funds were returned from the Parliamentary Constituency Development Fund saying that the government building could not be constructed. Everyone will be in touch with the post office in some way. The constituency development fund allocated to us is allocated from the people's tax money. It should be allowed to allocate for public development projects that are a bridge to the people. We are constantly struggling at our level to have some relaxation on things like this. We continue to raise our voices and fight to strengthen public sector institutions that serve the people at any time of disaster at the risk of their lives," he said.
The Coimbatore Division of Post Offices, Senior Superintendent K. Gopalan, and Rotary Club Administrators Ganesh Kumar, S. Swaminathan, Santiago Jesus, Dr. Mohana Sundaram, Balasubramanian among others participated.
