Coimbatore: The District Collector has stated that 8 persons have been imprisoned for the offence of child marriage in the city in November based on complaints received at the Child Help Line.
Releasing a press note, the District Collector GS Sameeran has stated that, “The legal age for marriage as per law for women is 18 and men is 21, and marriages below these ages are considered a violation of the law.”
Based on an inspection after receiving tip-off on child marriage, eight persons have been booked in the district during November month. Sathish Kumar of Thoppampattiyanur, Annur, Vijayabharathi of K.K. Puthur, Vijay from Karekoundampalayam, Mani of Krishnagiri, Arun Kumar of Pollachi Marapet, Premkumar from Valparai, Manimuthu and Sabariswaran of Pollachi Kottur and their kins are booked on behalf of Social Welfare Department. An FIR is filed against the eight accused and they are imprisoned.
The district collector added that the Child Line Help Desk can be reached at 1098 and the Women Help Desk at 181 to report and thus prevent child marriages.
