Coimbatore: The Ramanathapuram police are investigating the suicide attempt of a woman who set herself ablaze as she was unable to repay her debts.
The couple Selvaperumal and Jyotilakshmi, of Ramanathapuram, run a tailor shop in the same area. Jyotilakshmi, (36), accumulated ₹.40,000 as debt from Yashoda, in a chit fund in the same area through Kalpana Devi, one of her customers.
An amount of ₹ 2,500 per month was being paid monthly, but Jyotilakshmi was unable to pay any cash to Yashoda due to poor business. Enraged Yashoda took ₹ 26,000 paid by Kalpana Devi, due to whichKalpana and Jyotilakshmi had disputes demanding repayment. Reportedly, Kalpana created a fuss at their tailor shop on Wednesday morning asking her to repay her money, which triggered Jyotilakshmi into attempting suicide.
Drenched in kerosene, Jyoti’s dress caught fire from a lamp near Ganesh statue outside of the tailor shop. The public rushed to rescue Jyotilakshmi. By then her husband Selva Perumal who was also in the process of putting out the fire was subsequently injured and both suffered burns.
The duo was taken to the Coimbatore GH for treatment. Ramanathapuram police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
