Coimbatore: A section of political parties staged a protest in front of the Coimbatore South Taluk Office demanding the operation of the Thiruchendur train via Coimbatore and Pollachi.
The protestors also demanded connection of the Pollachi Kinathukadavu railway station with the Salem line. Protestors chanted slogans emphasizing their demands and they came down on the Railways for boycotting Coimbatore district.
Speaking on the occasion, Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam General Secretary K. Ramakrishnan said that the Dindigul wide gauge railway line would be constructed after various protests and the Railway Department was refusing to run trains via Coimbatore. For example, the Thiruchendur train is requested to run from Mettupalayam and the train is being operated from Palakkad.
Therefore, today's protest is taking place condemning the railway sector and the central government that governs it. It is also requested to connect Pollachi Kinathukadavu railway station to Salem line, he said.
The protest was attended by over 50 people from more than 20 parties and organizations, including Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, the Marxist Communist Party, the Communist Party of India, the Viduthalai Siruthaigal, the Marumalarchi DMK and the TMMK.
