NITI Aayog releases SDG index 2021; With an overall 87 marks, Coimbatore tops in ‘Poverty Alleviation’

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) list for the year 2021 was released on Tuesday, and Coimbatore secured the second position in India and topped in the poverty reduction sector.


Coimbatore:Coimbatore has topped in the list of poverty alleviation cities in India, and ranked 2nd in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Two cities in Tamil Nadu are ranked in the 'NITI Aayog' ranking slot for sustainable development targets. The NITI Aayog of the Government of India released the Sustainable Development Goals Urban Index on Tuesday, for the first time based on the performance of major cities in achieving the sustainable development target.

A total of 56 cities were assessed on the SDG indicators The NITI Aayog of the center is taking up important tasks such as monitoring the country's sustainable development goals, cooperation between states and Union Territories and promoting joint activities. The SDG Index for 2021 was released in collaboration with a German Development Corporation.

Coimbatore scored 73.29 and was ranked 2nd. Similarly, Trichy is ranked 8th with 70 marks. Chennai is ranked 16th with 69.36 points and Madurai is ranked 26th with 65.85. It may be noted that Shimla topped the list with 75.50 marks.

Coimbatore topped the list with 87 marks in the category of 'Poverty Alleviation’. Trichy and Madurai are ranked 2nd with 80 points. Chennai is ranked 10th with 65 points.
