Tomatoes are being procured by Cooperatives including DUCS and Chintamani in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: In Tamil Nadu, the supply of vegetables has been on a steady decline due to the Northeast monsoon leading to a hike in the price of vegetables. Tomatoes are currently being sold at Rs.120 to Rs.140, per kg.
Co-operation Minster of Tamil Nadu, I Periyasamy had announced that as a measure to curb the rise in prices of vegetables, tomatoes would be distributed through the Farm Fresh Cooperative outlets at prices as low as Rs.85-100 per kg, which is much lower than the present prices at the external markets. To this end, the Minister has stated that the Government would procure 15 metric tons of tomatoes per day and sell them through these outlets.
From November 24 onwards, tomatoes will be procured by cooperatives including DUCS and Chintamani in Coimbatore and sold at 10 Farm Fresh Cooperative outlets in Coimbatore.
Chintamani Head Office, District Library Commission Building Complex, Chintamani NSR Road Branch Office, Flower Store Building Complex, Poo Market, Aavin Milk Sales Office Complex, Telugupalayam Co-operative Credit Union Building Complex, Pappanaickenpalayam Co-operative Warehouse, Coimbatore Periyanaickenpalayam Panchayat Union Vegetable Growers' Association, District Local Planning Board Office, Ondipudur City Co-operative Credit Union Complex are the 10 Farm Fresh Cooperative outlets that are presently selling 1 kg tomatoes at Rs.75. Steps are being taken to increase purchases to meet the needs of the people, according to officials of the Co-operative Department.
